Getting the word out…

The University Players’ will pay tribute to the late Trevor Rhone with a staging of his award-winning comedy “Two Can Play” which will be presented for just six performances beginning Saturday October 17th and continuing through to Monday October 26 at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts, UWI, Mona.

Two Can Play, a work which won the award for Best Jamaican Play in 1982, features performances by 2008 Actor Boy Award nominees Nadean Rawlins and Alwyn Scott, and is directed by Brian Heap, who also won this year’s award for Best Director. The most recent University Players’ appearance by Nadean Rawlins and Alwyn Scott was in the Players’ memorable production of A. R. Gurney’s Love Letters which was presented earlier this year. In Two Can Play, Scott and Rawlins play Jim and Gloria, a Jamaican couple who try their wildest schemes to escape Kingston gun crime in the nineteen seventies and establish residence in the United States.

In his original foreword to the play Jamaica’s former Prime Minister Michael Manley wrote:

“Two Can Play is about love, and estrangement; about domination and liberation; about confusion and compassion. It is about two human beings who nearly lose one another – but who eventually struggle back together through uncertainty, through quarrels, through humiliation. Ultimately, Gloria and Jim survive because they learn to communicate and finally to re-discover one another – not so much as they were but as what they each can try to become.”

The University Players’ production of Two Can Play continues the tradition of the pursuit of excellence which the company has established for itself over the past few years. Nadean Rawlins has been involved, either as performer or producer, with all the University Players’ productions since the group’s revival in 2003. She says, “Each production by the Players brings its own challenges. That’s why so many actors in Jamaica are willing to give freely of their time to participate. All of us learn something, and at the same time are thrilled to be performing for such appreciative audiences.”

The production opens for six shows only at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts on Saturday October 17th at 8pm. A special performance will be held at 6pm on Sunday October 18th to benefit the McSyl Basic School in Bellas Gate, to which Mr. Trevor Rhone had committed his support shortly before his passing. Thereafter performances will be on Thursday, and Friday and October 22nd, and 23rd at 8pm, Sunday October 25th at 6pm and Monday October 26 at 8pm. Please note there will be NO SHOW on Saturday October 24th. Two Can Play, runs for just six performances from Saturday October 17th thru to Monday October 26th. Don’t miss it!!

Megan Fox and Cristiano Ronaldo replace Victoria and David Beckham as the faces of Emporio Armani

Megan Fox and Cristiano Ronaldo have taken over from Victoria and David Beckham as the new faces (and bodies) of Emporio Armani Underwear.

Transformers star Fox, who has stripped off for numerous steamy photo shoots before, will feature in the black and white adverts out in January.

The 23-year-old is the new female face – and body – of the campaign, while footballer Cristiano Ronaldo will model the men’s range.

Sadly, the photogenic pair will not pose together as Victoria and David Beckham did, WWD Media reports.

Megan was photographed by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott in Los Angeles over the weekend.

The adverts will appear in print as well as on billboards, but it has not been decided whether Megan will participate at in-store events tied in with the campaign launch.

Real Madrid star Ronaldo, 24, has already eclipsed Beckham in the footy stakes after his record £80million transfer from Manchester United – and is now set to give Goldenballs a run for his money in the fashion world.

He already made his mark this summer in Italy when he was snapped in tiny white shorts, a pink baseball cap and a pink flower tucked behind his ear to finish off the look.

His campaign images are yet to be shot.

Megan can next be seen in Diablo Cody’s new film Jennifer’s Body.

X Factor winner Leona Lewis punched by maniac at book signing in Waterstones

The man who punched Leona Lewis ‘full-on’ in the side of the face leaving her shaken and bruised has been uncovered as a 29-year-old foreign man called Peter, according to reports.

After throwing the punch and being wrestled to the ground by security at the Waterstone’s Store in London last night, the long-haired man shouted out “I love you!” as the shaken star screamed back ‘I don’t love you!” it has emerged.

Described as tall and ‘buck-toothed’, the 29-year-old man was said to have queued for up to three hours at the Piccadilly store to have the star’s new autobiography Dreams signed before he lashed out at the shocked singer in a bizarre and unprovoked attack.

Sun: “It was horrendous. He waited for Leona to bow his head then just lashed out – a proper full-on punch on the side of her face.

“She let out a piercing scream and grabbed her temple. Security piled on this guy and Leona just started running.”

The 2006 X Factor winner was supported by her furious boyfriend Lou Al-Chamaa and her mother Maria and left the signing in tears and wearing dark sunglasses.

It was horrendous. He waited for Leona to bow his head then just lashed out

The attack took place just an hour-and-a-half into the signing.

The attacker was arrested and taken into custody and it’s believed the singer will be pressing charges.

“She’s very shaken. She keeps asking why anyone would want to hurt her. Leona’s the sweetest most mild-mannered girl. It was like kicking a kitten,” a source close to the 24-year-old star told The Daily Mirror.

After being checked out by a doctor the singer, who’s next single is called ‘Happy’, cancelled an appearance on The One Show later that evening.

Even after her experience, the kind-hearted singer was upset that she didn’t manage to see all of her fans. Her spokesman said: “Leona is understandably shaken but she is absolutely gutted she did not get the signings finished.”

A Waterstone’s spokesman said: “We’re incredibly dismayed the actions of a single person have ruined this event for Leona and her fans.”

Singer Leona Lewis cancelled a visit to Germany as she recovered from being punched in the head at a book signing for fans.

The 24-year-old had been due to fly out for a day-long promotional trip, but pulled out in the aftermath of the incident.

Former X Factor winner Lewis had been signing copies of her autobiography at Waterstone’s Piccadilly in London on Wednesday afternoon, when a man in the queue suddenly lashed out. She was left “shaken”.

Police arrested a 29-year-old man at the scene.

Her spokesman said: “Leona was due to go to Germany for promo but that has now been cancelled. Leona is obviously shocked after yesterday (Wednesday) but is OK.”

Rehearsals for her first major UK show are due to begin next week and it is understood Lewis is planning to press ahead with them. She is due to play the Hackney Empire next month.

Lewis was taken to see a doctor as a precaution after being struck, but needed no further treatment. Witnesses said she had been happily signing for around 90 minutes when a man whose book she autographed suddenly punched her in the side of the head.

Her spokesman, who was at the signing, did not hear the man say anything to Lewis during the “unprovoked” incident and security officers swooped in. He was seen laughing immediately afterwards.

Lewis was said to be “gutted” she had not been able to finish the signing session. Her spokesman said that hitting a woman was “beyond cowardly”.

Before the signing session for her book called Dreams, Lewis posed for photographs and spoke to reporters. Interviewed by the Press Association, she said she was pleased to see so many fans in the queue. “I am so glad at the turnout,” she said. “It’s amazing. I can’t believe people are coming to support and I am just very thankful.”

The Kingston & St. Andrew Action Forum (KSAAF), a community development group, which rose to prominence by advocating controversial policies such as condoms availability in school and curfews for children on school night, is brewing with uncertainty as an imminent election is expected Sunday, November 29, 2009.

For the first time since the inception of the organization six (6) years ago, Mr. Godfrey Lothian, who currently occupies the post as President, is being challenged. It is also still unclear whether Lawman Lynch, who holds the office of 1st Vice President, will have a challenger. Mean time the office of the 2nd Vice President is being contested by three aspirants.

Under Lothian leadership the KSAAF has received budgetary support of over forty million dollars ($40,000,000.00) from the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), over a three (3) year period, and additional grant funding from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Among many of the achievements of the organization, which started out of the UNDP Civic Dialogue Programme have been: lobbying the PNP Administration while it formed Government for a percentage of the GCT to go directly to community development; Insisting there be a curfew for children on school nights; Proposal for condom availability in schools and the “Get the guns off the street campaign”.

The Youth Organization attached to KSAAF is scheduled, also, to have an election before November 29, so far, Lynch whose responsibility entails the youth arm has been without a declared running opponent; the situation may change give that nominations are still open.

If both Lothian and Lynch are re-elected, they would be serving a fourth term, and would be the longest serving executives of the organization. Elections are set for Sunday November 29, 2009 at the Mico University College.

Suspect Damon Thompson sometimes acted erratically, officials say. He is being held on $1-million bond and will be arraigned Tuesday. The victim, a fellow student, shows improvement.

October 10, 2009

Detectives investigating the case of a UCLA student who allegedly slashed the throat of a classmate have still not discovered what prompted the violence and are looking into reports that he showed erratic behavior in the past that had worried other students, authorities said Friday.

Investigators said they will continue to examine the background and mental health of the suspect, Damon Thompson, 20, a senior who came from Belize to attend UCLA. But nothing so far points to a direct motive for what appeared to be an unprovoked knife attack in an organic chemistry lab class on Thursday afternoon. The 20-year-old victim was reported to be recovering Friday.

Thompson is being held on $1-million bail on suspicion of attempted murder and is expected to be arraigned Tuesday. Continue reading
