On Monday, May 24, 2010 Trinidad and Tobago went to the polls, electing its first Indian-origin female Prime Minister in that of former Attorney General Kamla Persad-Bissessar. The 59-year-old led her five-party People’s Partnership (PP) coalition to claim a whopping 29 out of 41seats over the Peoples National Movement (PNM) to sit in Parliament.
Persad-Bissessar is the leader of the United National Congress (UNC).
The twin island Republic famous for its Soca music today saw recounts in the Arima, Diego Martin North/East and Point Fortin constituencies.
The biggest victory at the polls was recorded by FIFA Vice-President and CONCACAF President Jack Warner. Warner who serves as theUNC chairman got 18,767 votes in Chaguanas West to secure the seat for the PP by a huge margin of 17,296, PNM candidate Ronald Heera getting just 1,471 votes.
