Speaking in an address at Jamaica’s Parliament Prime Minister Bruce Golding has announced an increase in general consumption tax (GCT). The new rate in GCT is expected to move from 16.5 per cent to 17.5 per cent.

In addition, the Prime Minister noted that some items previously exempted will now attract GCT. Also in the address the Government have announced that the recently imposed gas tax has also been increased.

In the meantime, customers who are feeling the effects of the recession will have to dig deeper in their pockets as they will have to pay the full GCT charges on their Jamaica Public Service (JPS) bills once their consumption tops over 200 kilowatt per month.

Dexter Communications will provide more details shortly.
